Excruiatingly slow compilation, memory use in excess of 400M

Extended Description

The attached unit test now takes LONG time to compile with -O3. I gave
up after 10 minutes - and it uses over 400M while doing so.
This is w/sac2c rev 14797. I believe the same thing ran fairly
quickly yesterday.
